  I forgot to mention that at the District Assembly Saturday afternoon session, when they announced the new DVD, the reception of the audience was lukewarm. It was more like the polite clapping you hear between the symposium talks, rather than the usual excitement when a new release is announced.

  After that underwhelming response to the DVD announcement, instead of a video preview (there was no drop-down screen in this venue), they played that kids song that is on the video - the whole thing. I have to admit that the kids voices were cute, but like all JW songs, it was way too long and extremely boring. I could see that everyone was using the time during the song to pack up and get ready to make a break as soon as the final prayer was over. Again, after the final announcements, polite but lukewarm clapping.

  I hung back to see whether the crush of excited families would push one of the sisters handing out the DVDs over the rail and into the depths below. No such luck. I was somewhat surprised to see that many families didn't even stop to take a DVD but just continued on and down the ramp. The sister in my area looked disappointed that more people weren't pushing and shoving and catching a feel - but barely took notice of her.

  I looked at the main floor and saw the same thing going on. Everyone seemed to be rushing for the exits while the sisters handing out the DVDs just stood there with four or five copies in their hands hoping that someone would ask them for a copy.

  When I finally moved toward the exit I stopped to pick up a copy. I wasn't wearing a tie or a badge, so I figured that I might meet with a little resistance when I asked for one from the sister. I noticed that the first box (they'd stacked two cartons on the floor) was only about 1/2 empty and the other carton was untouched. The sister actually offered me two DVDs and asked if I wanted more when I told her that I would like one for my granddaughters. She seemed to take no note of my lack of proper JW attire.

  Since this was the second DA to be held in the same area in two weeks, I'm wondering if the word got out and many of the attendees had already seen the video and rightly assumed that it was a waste of time and would just clutter up their entertainment center. My guess is that many had already seen the video on YouTube and may have read some of the negative commentary (thanks to Cedars and other the fine exes) on this site and others.

  One other thing I noticed: When the boxes of DVDs were delivered to the distribution locations, the contribution boxes were brought out the same time and placed downwind from each DVD handler. Boxes were positioned about 30 feet apart with a sister sitting next to them. The speaker also took some time to make an announcement that ATMs were available, two on each side of each of the main exits - and that everyone should feel free to use them.

  Earlier, a speaker mentioned that they needed more helpers for the cleanup crews. But I was still surprised to see some brothers carrying brooms into the main floor of the assembly hall while the session was still going on - at the same time that the DVD boxes and contribution boxes were being delivered and set up.

  To me it seemed like the assembly committee was saying, "Get your damn DVD, put your money in the contribution box or ATM, and then get the hell out!" And that's exactly what most of them did. But after sitting there without a break for almost 4 solid hours, I couldn't blame them.

  There wasn't a lot of chit-chat and fellowship going on after the session was over. I didn't hang around for more than ten minutes, but by the time I worked my way out, the parking lots were almost empty.

  When I left I didn't see anyone using the ATMs, and I saw a lot of lonely sisters sitting next to contribution boxes looking like woeful wallflowers at a senior prom.

  When the infamous Sparlock video was released at the Pacific Northwest District Assembly last Saturday, the speaker (Brother Sahid?) announced that the first DVD was "an exception." He clearly stated that future "Be Jehovah's Friend" videos would be released online at the "new JW.org website." He also implied that other videos and audio downloads would be available as well. When he mentioned the smaller sizes of the magazines, he indicated that approach would make them easier to distribute. He said something like "those we meet in our door-to-door service will be less intimidated by the smaller sizes and more likely to read everything in the magazines." We'll see...

  Professional magicians are the first ones to tell you that there is no such thing as "magic," only illusion. Many have spent years researching and chasing down reports of so-called "real magic" - but not a single example has ever been found. There are some amazing, and in some cases, unexplainable examples of visual trickery. In most cases, even the most amazing magic can be explained with a little research.

  An excellent movie from 2006, "The Illusionist," starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti, demonstrates this quite well. Harry "Houdini" spent his life looking for evidence of real spiritism and unexplained magicians' tricks. I've seen some amazing tricks on YouTube and in other videos that defy explanation, but in every case it always boils down to slight-of-hand, misdirection, or some mechanical prop that makes everything work.

  When I was younger I worked for the telephone company in Hollywood, California. On at least two occasions I had to make service calls at famed Magic Castle in the Hollywood Hills. This was in the late 1960s, so things may have changed a lot since then, but in those days the telephone equipment was located near a workshop-storage room. I seem to recall having to sign a form agreeing to keep anything I saw confidential. If I was found to have given away any professional secrets, both my company and I individually could be sued for breach of confidence. When our technicians had to go there, most of the devices were carefully hidden away or covered with sheets or tarps. Anything visible was usually just a plain aluminum frame or a table of some type.

  Uri Geller, self proclaimed psychic, used common magician's tricks to convince millions that he was something special and that he was not using magic. The "Amazing Randi" is noted for his work of exposing so-called "real magicians, psychics, mind readers, and holy men" - all who use basic parlor tricks to convince their audiences that they have a special gift that can not be purchased by anyone with $10 at a magic store located in a nearby strip mall.

  The Watchtower is acting in a criminal manner by suggesting that a simple plastic toy could have any special power or satanic influence. You can now add Sparlock to Watchtower's fairy tales of Adam and Eve, the talking snake, Noah's ark, and Jonah and the "big freaking fish" (but not a whale).

  I watched a preacher on TV one night proclaim that any version of the Bible that was not the Authorized King James of 1611 was "written by the Devil himself!" He went on to say that Jesus said everyone of the words as printed in that Bible just as they were written - even the "thees" and "thous"! He went on to say that if you read one of the modern translations you will instantly be possessed by Satan. Any sane person would recognize that the preacher was either insane or a total liar in every sense, and yet his followers nodded their heads in agreement along with their constant "amens" to every word he said.

  And thus sayeth the Watchtower Governing Body. "If we say that plastic toys made in China or India can act on the Devil's behalf and can some how influence or weaken Jehovah's powers, that is 'the truth' as given us by holy spirit."

  F'ing ridiculous and f'ing fraudulent.

  Does anybody here know for sure what day and time the DVD was released at the District Assembly?

  The second DA for the coastal Pacific Northwest takes place this weekend. It's only a 5 minute drive for me to get over there. I don't mind wandering in and sitting through one talk, might even record it while there, but I really don't want to have to endure much more than that. I am fairly well known in the local Kingdom Hall area. Two JWs from the local KH dropped off an invitation two weeks ago, but their convention was last week at the same location. I should be unrecognized this weekend because most of the KHs are over 25 miles away.

  I'd like to get a copy or two of the DVDs and also the talk that goes with it.

  So - can anyone give me an idea of the best time to show up there? I think my wife tossed the invite, but I think the timing is probably the same for both convention weekends. Also, did they specifically recommen any particular donation?

  I can't believe it only has the 4 segments. Kids will watch pt 1 and 2 a few times and then put the DVD away forever. JW always think that thowing out anything published by the WT Society is holy, so tossing anything out would be like a public Bible burning to them.

  i've just finished my fourth and final "under the microscope" series of articles in which (hopefully) i've debunked many of the arguments often put forward by those claiming that jehovah's witnesses must be god's sole channel of communication with mankind.. this latest article focusses mostly on "the finished mystery" and the many errors contained therein that prove it couldn't possibly have been approved by christ when he was ostenisbly selecting the bible students as his chosen earthly representatives in 1919. i would like to thank and acknowledge alfred as being a huge help in compiling a list of key "highlights" of the book that serve to expose it for what it really is - a total work of fiction and absurdity.. shortly before alfred left this forum, we discussed the possibility of using his list to produce a special leaflet that people could print out themselves and insert in their "revelation climax" books, or "revelation climax" books belonging to family members.

  I just noticed that both Cedars and processor have swastika looking IP identifiers. Could this be significant? Are they both agents of Satan? I don't know, but they are talking about translating the flyer into German and Hitler spoke German. Could there be a connection?

  So you think you were a True Witness?

  fuck you.. i was raised in a jw family in the 1980's-1990's where we had to do the daily text 7 days a week during breakfast at the family table at 7am sharp between 7:00-7:15am.

  this was followed by a "spiritual discussion," which was held every morning between 7:15am and 8:00am.. since we were homeschooled, our weekly field service was required from childhood on friday mornings immediately following the spiritual discussion, followed by saturday afternoon field service after the bookstudy, as well as sunday afternoon field service after the watchtower study.. i was also required to read each watchtower and awake magazine and give oral reports about each magazine i read in order for my father to be sure that i had actually read them.

  i can't remember for sure, but i think each watchtower and awake was released every two weeks back then, making a new magazine to read every single week, followed by an oral report on every single article (including the watchtower study articles which i also had to read, then study in our weekly family watchtower study where we marked our answers, then studied again at the sunday watchtower study).. in addition to this, we also had a weekly family bible study at night each week, had a family bookstudy at night in which we marked our answers for the saturday morning bookstudy, had a family watchtower study at night where we marked our answers for the sunday morning watchtower study, had a family prayer together every night before bed, every morning before and after breakfast and every night before and after dinner (not including our half-family prayers for lunch by my mother since we were homeschooled.).

  My childhood was structured very much like yours and had a very similar level of commitment. At the same time, I have to admit it wasn't quite as severe as yours. The rules were a little different back in the 1950s-60s. But, just as it is now, Armageddon was just around the corner in 1953 and 1958 - at least that's what Bros. Knorr and Franz told us at the big New York International Conventions. And we believed them. Yes, we did...

  The first thing you need to do is get some serious medical treatment for your depression and dependence on alcohol.

  Forget about the JWs and the Watchtower. They had nothing for you then and they have even less for you now. Stay as far away from them as you can get and concentrate only on your health. Limit your exposure to any of their poison.

  I never expected to see the age of 30 when I left the Organization in the mid-1960s. Now I'm just a few months short of 70 and know without a doubt that there will be no "Armageddon" in my lifetime - or during my grandchildren's lifetimes. Mt. Hood may blow its top, or a great Pacific Rim earthquake may come and take my life - but I know that it won't be "Armageddon."

  I live every day with the singular joy of knowing that I am a critic - not a member - of the Watchtower cult and that none of my children or grandchildren are connected in any way to the Jehovah's Witnesses. Because I left the Witnesses in the mid-1960s all of my descendants are not and will not be Jehovah's Witnesses. They all live happy, financially secure, and healthy lives. I can only imagine the damage that could have been done to them if I had given in to my JW wife's demands that I repent and return to the "Truth."

  You were fortunate that you never allowed yourself to be baptized. Those of us who were raised by "true believer" JW parents like I was - and my childhood friend, author Dick Kelly (Growing up in Mama's Club and Ghosts of Mama's Club) - know what it was like having to go to school, work a job, go to meetings three nights a week, and put in 10-20 "real" hours of door-to-door service each month.

  But we survived once we got out. We have healthy, sane, and interesting lives - doing what we want to do, no longer bound to a boring existence as slaves of the "The Slave." TM

  The original version of the New World Translation (1950-1960) was not really translated, but rather rewritten in [then] modern day American English. Fred Franz did most of the "translating" and then the translation committee voted on suggestions and changes. Franz approved or rejected their suggestions. Nathan Knorr, as president, signed off on the final version based on Franz's assurances that everything was a accurate as possible.

  Recent updates to the NWT have mostly involved correcting some of Franz's tongue-tying sentence structure and to update some verses to conform with current WT "new light" teachings.

  Any college level English major could re-edit the NWT in a way that would make it far more readable using 21st century English. In fact, there are several excellent automated editing programs that could correct Franz's awkward phraseology (From "Jehovah, he himself will..." to "Jehovah will..."). I always found reading the earlier versions of the NWT to be exhausting and lacking style.

  You can still see Franz's influence clearly in many of the magazine article titles, the yearly scripture phrases (posted on the stage of the Kingdom Halls), and the theme names for the various conventions.
